College Announces Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant

Posted on 20 September 2013 | 11:26 am

The College of Charleston is one of just a handful of colleges and universities in the nation to host a Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant for the 2013-2014 academic year.

The Fulbright TA is Juliana Passos, a Ph.D. student from the Universidade Federal do Paraná in Brazil. Passos is currently teaching a Portuguese language class and four conversation classes in the Department of Hispanic Studies.

The College of Charleston was chosen to host because of the institution’s strong programs in languages and international cultures.

Fulbright is the most widely recognized and prestigious international exchange program in the world.

The program — working with universities, schools, binational Fulbright commissions and foundations, government agencies, nongovernmental organizations and the private sector — actively seeks out individuals of achievement and potential who represent the full diversity of their respective societies and selects nominees through open, merit-based competitions.

Fulbrighters play a variety of roles, both during and after their Fulbright experiences. These roles include being students, scholars, teachers, lecturers, researchers, mentors, artists, philanthropists, cultural ambassadors and social entrepreneurs.
