The College of Charleston’s Office of Sustainability now has two locations for their community Book Share. Brown’s Court Bakery (199 St. Philip St) is the newest host of the community book exchange, joining Black Tap Coffee (70 ½ Beaufain St.).

Started by College alumni Deborah Ong and Miriam Maier in the fall of 2012, the Book Share program creates a point of exchange for books, comics, and magazines that is self-sustaining. The goal of this project is to strengthen Charleston’s sense of community by fostering simple gestures of trust and sharing. The exchanges are situated outside of businesses to maximize accessibility and visibility. Most of the boxes for the book share were purchased from local carpenter Landrum Tables, who uses reclaimed wood from the Charleston area in his creations.

The project originally started with books and magazines, but patrons of the Book Share at Black Tap Coffee began to expand the collection by adding DVDs this spring.

Members of the community are encouraged to take or leave books, magazines, or DVDs they would like to share. “It took about two months for the exchange at Black Tap to catch on,” said Deborah Ong, one of the founders of the project. “I’m hoping that the same happens at Brown’s Court when the semester starts.”
