Senior Christin Newman Named SoCon Player of the Year

Christin NewmanCollege of Charleston senior standout Christin Newman (Greensboro, N.C.) was tabbed Southern Conference Player of the Year as the 2013 SoCon Women’s Tennis Postseason Awards were announced by the league office on Tuesday.

Newman, an Honors College student, becomes the first women’s tennis player in program history to be named Player of the Year since CofC joined the SoCon in 1998. She also earned All-SoCon First Team honors for the third year in a row playing at the No. 1 singles position for the Cougars. Newman has posted a team-leading 17-6 overall record in dual matches including an 8-1 league mark. She has won nine of her last 10 matches with a current five-match win streak heading into postseason play.

Meanwhile, freshman Brooke McAmis (Greensboro, N.C.) earned a spot on the six-member All-Freshman Team after putting together a 12-5 overall record and 7-1 conference mark playing primarily at the No. 3 singles line for the Cougars in her rookie campaign.

For the fifth time in the SoCon and sixth time overall in his career, College of Charleston Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo was named SoCon Coach of the Year. He led the Cougars to their third league regular-season championship title in the last four years with a 17-8 overall record and 9-1 conference mark.

Anastopoulo previously won the postseason nod by his fellow coaching peers in 2001, 2003, 2010 (co) and 2011 as well as in 1996 as members of the Trans America Athletic Conference (TAAC). This past season, he claimed his 400th career women’s victory in a 4-3 decision over Kansas out of the Big 12 Conference on Feb. 16 at the College of Charleston Tennis Center in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.

The Southern Conference Tennis Championships will be held on April 18-21 at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center and Burlington Tennis Center in Elon, N.C. The CofC women earned the No. 1 tournament seed and will take on either Samford or Davidson on Friday, April 19 at 10 a.m. (ET).
