As part of a series sponsored by the College of Charleston, South Carolina native and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke is offering his insights this week on the challenges facing the Palmetto State. 
“I was raised in the town of Dillon in the Pee Dee area, and attended public schools there. I was lucky to have good teachers and many opportunities to help prepare me for college and my career,” Bernanke said. “We need to make sure that each South Carolinian has access to the best education our state and communities provide. We must invest in our future by investing in our people.”

“I hope this innovative, multi-disciplinary succeeds in its ambitious goal with helping the people of my home state, dream, connect, and learn together to make South Carolina world class,” said Bernanke. “South Carolina needs to make sure it offers a diverse set of institutions to foster lifelong learning; not only strong colleges and universities but also community and junior colleges, technical and vocational schools, on the job training and other programs that people can return to whenever they need to raise their skill levels.”
This statewide endeavor has been developed as an inter-disciplinary project of the College of Charleston under the personal direction of its co-founders, College of Charleston President George Benson and Charleston businessman Phil Noble. In addition to the College, sponsors include businesses and media partners across the state, and the project will culminate this spring with an event for students to showcase their ideas on the college campus.
“This may be the most ambitious project of its kind in South Carolina history,” said Envision SC co-founder Phil Noble. “Real change always comes from the ground up and from the outside in – from real people. That’s what this project is all about, and President Benson and I are just honored to be a part of it.”
