413Always known for having one of the premiere programs in the country, the College of Charleston coed sailing team earned a No. 1 national ranking as Sailing World’s college rankings, presented by Sperry Top-Sider, was announced on Wednesday.

The Cougars received six first-place votes to tie Georgetown for top billing with 338 points each in the first national rankings of the 2013 spring season. They were previously ranked No. 3 in the final fall rankings released in November.

“We are pleased with the team’s latest No. 1 ranking as it is indicative of their tremendous talent and incredible depth,” College of Charleston  Director of Sailing Greg Fisher said. “Although it is still very early in the season and there are many regattas ahead of them, I feel the team is focused, well prepared and truly psyched to have an exceptional season. We are all proud of how hard they are working to make it happen.”

The Cougar women also climbed to No. 7 in the women’s rankings released on Wednesday.
