College of Charleston Junior Amie Bradshaw was in the middle of finals when she got the call that she had been awarded a full scholarship from the United States Air Force. Bradshaw, an applied mathematics major who is in the Honors College, participates in Air Force ROTC through a crosstown agreement at Charleston Southern University and will receive an $18,000 annual scholarship to apply towards her remaining two years at the College.
“She immediately distinguished herself academically, physically, and emotionally, while at the same time demonstrating outstanding leadership characteristics,” says Lt. Col. Paul Dudley. “The scholarship reflects great credit upon her and the College of Charleston, and we are confident she will make an outstanding officer in a year and a half.” Currently, three students at the College are participating in the program at Charleston Southern. They meet and train twice a week for three hours, and after graduation, cadets are commissioned as Second Lieutenants in the Air Force.
“Amie has an excellent GPA, she scored exceptionally well on the Air Force Officer Qualification Test and performed very well on her Physical Fitness Assessment. She’s a natural leader who is involved heavily with her community and carries herself in a way that commands respect,” says Dudley.
“Detachment 772 has been a very unique and rewarding experience in my college career,” says Bradshaw. “These classes have helped to cement what an honor it is to be serving in our nation’s military and has given me the tools to succeed in my future career.”
Bradshaw is weighing her options. “I am playing with the idea of teaching middle school. I love children so much, and my little brother has Downs Syndrome, so I’ve also considered working with children with special needs. I see my life going a lot of different ways, and I am excited to start off in the military because it will provide so much opportunity to grow as a person and as a leader.”
