Global Businesses Choose School of Business

Professionals are taking advantage of the College of Charleston’s Global Logistics and Supply Chain Management Program through an online certificate course. Recently Boeing offered it to employees, and several other logistics professionals in the southeast are enrolled.

Workshop Explores “New History” of Emancipation

The Carolina Lowcountry and Atlantic World (CLAW) program at the College of Charleston was recently awarded an $850 mini-grant from the Humanities Council SC. The grant supports a teachers’ workshop, “Teaching the New History of Emancipation”  that will be held on Friday, February 1, 2013 from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in room 227 of Addelstone Library.

Monday, February 4, 2013 is Education Day, and nearly 2,000 4th-8th graders from across the tri-county area will gather at TD Arena to learn more about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) programs and cheer on the College of Charleston Women’s Basketball team in their game against the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Doors open at 9:30 a.m and tip-off is at 11:30 a.m. Admission is free to students, teachers and family.

Students in a Food Security seminar course at the College of Charleston are learning how to generate and support local food systems, and why the health of local food systems is instrumental for the health of a society. On February 2, 2013 they will take their instruction off campus for the first of two field trips. The day will begin with volunteer work at the Lowcountry Foodbank in North Charleston, followed by a visit to two farms— Ambrose Farm on Wadmalaw Island and Joseph Field’s Farm on Johns Island—and ending with a visit to the College’s Dixie Plantation to work in the organic garden.

The 2013-14 College Reads! Selection is Announced

The College Reads! book selection for 2013-14 is Fun Home, by Alison Bechdel. All faculty and incoming students are encouraged to read this selection as it will be included in the academic curriculum and in activities throughout the year. Alison Bechdel will be on campus Thursday, October 24, 2013. The public lecture will be at 7:00pm that evening.

College of Charleston Senior Education Fellow Terry Peterson has been an advocate for struggling students for decades, and on Tuesday, February 5, 2013, Peterson will celebrate the release of the new book, Expanding Minds and Opportunities: Leveraging the Power of Afterschool & Summer Learning for Student Success. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. and will include an author discussion with a number of national education and community leaders, a book signing and live webinar. Students Take Course in “King Street as a Classroom”

Three hundred years ago it was an Indian trade route known as Broad Path. Today, it is an upscale shopping and tourist destination – and the focus of a class at the College of Charleston. Dale Rosengarten, a curator of Special Collections in Addlestone Library, is teaching “King Street as a Classroom,” and as part of the course, the students will host a panel discussion on Thursday, January 24, 2013, that explores the social and economic history of King Street. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Jewish Studies Center (Arnold Hall, 96 Wentworth Street). Refreshments will be served.

College Services Go Mobile With New App

The College of Charleston has launched “CofC Mobile”, an app that provides secure mobile access to popular College of Charleston online services via iOS and Android. CofC Mobile provides access to maps, news, emergency information, the events calendar, directory information, social media, library resources, OAKS, student and faculty class schedules, and grades.

Memorial Service for Ted Stern to be held Monday

A celebration of Ted Stern’s life will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, January 21, 2013, in the College of Charleston’s Cistern Yard. The family will greet friends at the College’s Stern Center Ballroom, across the street from the Cistern Yard, at the conclusion of the service until 3:00 p.m.
