College Participates in Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week

Posted on 7 November 2012 | 10:38 am

The College of Charleston Center for Civic Engagement is again hosting a variety of events for Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, which highlights issues of housing accessibility and food security within our local, national, and global communities. National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week is from November 11 through 17, 2012.

Events include a community forum spotlighting hunger and homelessness among different populations in the Charleston community and hands-on service events in collaboration with the Lowcountry Food Bank and Fields to Families. Initiatives highlighting homelessness among women, homelessness in urban settings, and food security among those receiving assistance through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program will also be facilitated throughout the week. View the schedule.

On Wednesday, November 14 at 6 p.m., the Jewish Student Union/Hillel will co-sponsor the 2nd annual Oxfam hunger banquet – an interactive and empowering event, which simulates the world’s inequalities. Participants will share a meal, discuss worldwide poverty, and learn more about local efforts to make a difference in the fight against hunger. Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to join us as we focus on raising awareness regarding the issue of hunger. Registration is required.

There will also be two volunteer opportunities for students to take action. On Friday, November 16, students will volunteering at the Lowcountry Food Bank from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Transportation is provided and registration is required. On Saturday, November 17, students will be volunteering with Fields to Families from 11:15 a.m. until 3 p.m. Transportation is provided and registration is required.

Canned goods will be collected at a number of locations on campus throughout the week to benefit Crisis Ministries.
