Two College of Charleston student-athletes closed out competition in their respective sports  at the 2012 London Olympic Games.

Senior point guard Andrew Lawrence (London, England) tallied six points, six assists, four rebounds, two steals and one blocked shot as Great Britain claimed the country’s first Olympic win in a 90-58 rout of China in Pool B play at The Basketball Arena located in Olympic Park.

Lawrence played 28:06 minutes, the second-most on the UK squad against the Chinese. Team GB went 1-4 against pool opponents in the preliminary round and had previously lost all five of its games in the country’s first and only prior appearance in the Olympics in 1948. Lawrence was the youngest member of the squad, at age 22, and one of only two current collegians on a roster of the 12 nation’s competing in basketball.

Meanwhile, senior sailor Juan Maegli (Guatemala City, Guatemala) placed seventh in the medal race of the Men’s Laser Class competition held on Weymouth Harbor in Weymouth, England, for an Olympic career-best ninth overall in the final standings with 129 points. He turned in five top 10 finishes in the 10-race event including first place in Race 1 to start off his second appearance at The Games strong behind finishing 33rd overall in 2008 in Beijing, China.

Maegli, who is ranked No. 21 in the world in the lasers, will look to qualify for the Olympics again in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Both Lawrence and Maegli will return to school and their respective teams in the coming weeks as the fall semester begins at College of Charleston on Aug. 21.
