The S.C. Earthquake Education and Preparedness Program at the College of Charleston confirms that a minor magnitude 2.8 earthquake occurred at 12:53 a.m. on July 31st 2012.  According to the USGS (United States Geologic Survey) the quake, which occurred near the intersection of Ladson Rd and the Ashley River, was reported felt in both Summerville and Ladson with a few reports from the Charleston area.

The 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London begin Friday, July 27, 2012, and end Sunday, Aug. 12, 2012. College of Charleston faculty experts are available to comment on a number of Olympics-related issues, including medical topics, sports performance, sports operations, Olympic values, and more.

Additionally, two current College of Charleston students will be competing in the London Games. Senior Andrew Lawrence (London, England) will be playing for the Great Britain men’s basketball team and senior sailor Juan Maegli (Guatamala City, Guatamala) will represent Guatamala in the laser class for the second-straight Olympic Games after having participated in 2008 in Beijing, China. The first exchange students from the College of Charleston’s bi-lateral agreement with the National Kaohsiung Normal University (NKNU) in Taiwan will begin taking classes in Charleston in Fall 2012. The agreement between the two universities was signed last summer and allows for up to four students from each university to participate in the exchange each year.

The College of Charleston will welcome 49 high school valedictorians and salutatorians in fall 2012. Twenty-two of those top students come from public high schools in South Carolina, while the rest represent nine other states from New Jersey to Texas.

College of Charleston senior education fellow Terry Peterson will represent South Carolina as one of the six most improved school systems at a Harvard University conference. “Learning from Improving School Systems at Home and Abroad” will take place from July 25 through 27, 2012 at Harvard’s Kennedy School (Program on Education Policy and Governance).

In its first year, the College of Charleston’s English Language Institute (ELI) has helped more than two-dozen international students gain proficiency in the English language. On July 18, 2012, nine students from Taiwan’s National Kaohsiung Normal University (NKNU) completed the first “language study abroad” experience during the institute’s summer English language and culture seminar. The College’s School of Education, Health, and Human Performance has a bi-lateral agreement with NKNU.
