The College of Charleston is introducing a new summer session class that will allow students to enjoy the beach and still earn two hours of college credit. Watch a video.

The College is the first east coast university to offer a “for-credit” stand-up paddle boarding class.  The class will be held in the College of Charleston Summer One and Summer Two sessions.

Stand-up paddle boarding combines the fun of surfing and canoeing. Using a surf style board and a long paddle, students can enjoy the sport in places as diverse as the flat waters of a lake and the swells of the ocean.  Stand-up paddle boarding has emerged as a  wonderful way to combine a strong core workout with the enjoyment of being on the water.

Most of the class work will be held on the beaches of Sullivan’s Island.

“We thought offering a class in a ‘hot’ new activity would attract students who might not be attracted to our more traditional summer offerings,” says Tom Carroll, a senior instructor at the School of Health and Human Performance at the College of Charleston. “I am excited about opening up the world of stand-up paddle boarding to our students.”

Along with instruction, students will also learn about equipment, technique, skill development and safety. Lectures will be incorporated in this course.

The course is available with the cooperation with Charleston Watersports.
