Preview Day for Multicultural Students

The College of Charleston offers several popular programs for minority students to experience college life. AALANA (African American, Latino, Asian, Native American) Preview Day is Saturday, October 8, 2011 and registration is still open. The event is free, but registration is required. Cougars Climb to #1 in Sailing World College Rankings

Italian Journalist on Campus

Italian writer and journalist Andrea Di Robilant will speak at the College of Charleston on Tuesday, October 4 at 2:00 p.m. in Physicians Memorial Auditorium. The lecture is entitled “On the Trail of the Zen Brothers, From Venice to the Great North: The Adventure of Historical Non-Fiction.” The event is free and open to the public.

Popular Italian Film Festival Returns

The 2011 Italian Film Festival, “Cinema Italiano: Southern Perspectives,” will begin on Thursday, October 20 and continue through Saturday, October 22, 2011. Presented by the College of Charleston’s Italian Program, the screenings will take place at Sottile Theater (44 George Street) and are free and open to the public. All movies are in Italian with English subtitles.

Advisory Council Adds New Members

The Department of Communication Advisory Council welcomes Mike Touhill, Connie Hubbell, Brad Horn, Edna Johnson, and Meredith Artley. The Council promotes the recognition and progress of communication instruction at the College of Charleston. The Advisory Council is made up of an outstanding and nationally prominent group of communication professionals who aid the Department of Communication in developing curricula, creating and improving departmental programs, and calling attention to the many accomplishments of the department’s students and faculty.

In celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month, the College of Charleston Office of Institutional Diversity (OID) and Círculo Hispanoamericano de Charleston will host Fernando Colón-Navarro, Associate Dean and Professor of Law at Texas Southern University’s Thurgood Marshall School of Law in Houston, Texas. Dean Colón-Navarro will speak about the Pre-Brown vs. Board of Education struggle for Latino children in the public schools.

Teal Day Supports Memory of Student

On September 30, 2011, the College of Charleston campus will swap its signature Cougar maroon for the color teal in recognition of Ovarian Cancer Month. Everyone is invited to wear teal (the color associated with this cancer) to emphasize the importance of education and awareness and in memory of Kimberlee Shonk, a College of Charleston student who passed away in January 2011 as a result of this silent killer.

Students Create Android Gaming App

Students in the College of Charleston’s game programming class (in the Department of Computer Science) have created a new video game for Android phones. Adolfo Rico Motis (an exchange student from Mexico), Corneliu Illisescu (an exchange student from Italy), and Carlos Rodriguez Flick (an exchange student from Mexico) prototyped “Okho” while taking a computing in the arts course at the College in 2010. They returned to their home countries, continued to correspond about the game, and added it to the Android Market in early September 2011.

College of Charleston BOT Committee Meeting
