The College of Charleston continues to track Hurricane Irene.  At this time, all College of Charleston events and classes remain on schedule.

A tropical storm warning has been issued for part of the South Carolina coast in advance of the arrival of Hurricane Irene. This area includes the City of Charleston.

A warning means those conditions are expected in that area in the next 36 hours, while a watch means conditions could come in 48 hours.

The hurricane is expected to pass well offshore to the east of the South Carolina coast.

The latest weather information concerning the path of Hurricane Irene can be found at http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/

The tropical storm warning means that wind gusts between 30-40 mph may occur on the coast as the storm passes on Friday night and Saturday. Strong rip currents also are anticipated throughout the weekend, so persons are strongly advised to stay out of the water

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley said the state is not planning any evacuations in advance of Hurricane Irene.

In the event that classes are cancelled, the College will notify students via CougarAlert and also post the information on the College’s web site.

TO ALL ENROLLED STUDENTS:

Is the information you have for CougarAlert correct?  CougarAlert pulls its information directly from the student information in Banner.  For students, the system pulls up to a maximum of six phone numbers in the following order:

  • Phone numbers associated with mailing addresses (formerly called local addresses)
  • Cell phone numbers with text messaging option
  • Cell phone numbers without text messaging option
  • Residence Hall phone number
  • Home phone number (previously called permanent phone number)
  • Parent phone number
  • Parent2 phone number

As such, it is important that all students verify their CougarAlert information to ensure emergency notifications will go to each desired telephone number.  Attached you will find step-by-step instructions to guide you through the process of verifying and editing your information.  Please follow the instructions to verify your CougarAlert information ASAP, and let me know if you find the instructions easy to follow.

If you have technical problems updating your address information, email registrar@cofc.edu from your College of Charleston email account.  You should include your name, college wide ID number and a detailed description of the problem.
