College of Charleston’s Andrew Goudelock was selected 46th overall in the 2011 NBA Draft held Thursday night at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. Watch a video of Goudelock’s highlights at the College.
Goudelock, a 6-foot-3 guard from Stone Mountain, Ga., was drafted in the second round by the Los Angeles Lakers. He becomes only second all-time draft pick in school history next to former Cougar great Anthony Johnson, who was selected 40th overall in the second round by the Sacramento Kings in 1997.
The 2011 Southern Conference Player of the Year, Goudelock played and started in all 37 games during his senior season leading the Cougars to a 26-11 overall record, a regular-season championship title with a 14-4 league mark and an appearance in the NIT Quarterfinals. He averaged a conference-leading 23.7 points per game which also ranked fourth nationally among NCAA Division I scoring leaders. Goudelock earned All-America honorable mention honors from The Associated Press.
“This is surreal and a dream come true,” said Goudelock from his draft watch party with family and friends in Atlanta. “I am very thankful and blessed to be chosen by the Lakers organization. I love the College of Charleston and will always remember my time there. I had so much fun playing for Coach Cremins, playing in front of our fans and making lifelong friends in my teammates.”
A prolific scorer with uncanny shooting range, Goudelock scored at least 20 points in 27 games of the 2010-11 season and topped the 30-point plateau six times, including a school-record 39-point effort against Dayton in the NIT First Round. He finished his career as CofC’s all-time leading scorer with 2,571 points, which ranks third all-time in SoCon history. He became just the 62nd player in NCAA history to record 2,500 points and ranks 39th on the NCAA’s all-time scoring list.
Goudelock also left his mark in the College of Charleston Division I record books ranked first all-time in career three-pointers made (396), fourth in career assists (424) and ninth in career rebounding (464). He was crowned the 2011 Mercedez-Benz Three-Point Champion and leading scorer of the West squad at the 2011 NABC All-Star Game held at the 2011 NCAA Final Four in Houston, Texas. The College of Charleston Board of Trustees recently passed a resolution congratulating and recognizing Goudelock for his career as a Cougar.
Over the last month, Goudelock traveled across the U.S. working out with 16 different NBA teams including the New Jersey Nets, Houston Rockets, Detroit Pistons, Oklahoma City Thunder, Los Angeles Lakers, Charlotte Bobcats, Milwaukee Bucks, Chicago Bulls, New York Knicks and Sacramento Kings leading up to the draft.
Goudelock is now one of 22 drafted players who have been mentored by Cougar head coach Bobby Cremins including former Georgia Tech stars John Salley (1986), Mark Price (1986), Tom Hammonds (1989), Dennis Scott (1990), Kenny Anderson (1991), Jon Barry (1992), Travis Best (1994), Stephon Marbury (1996), Matt Harpring (1998), Dion Glover (1999) and Jason Collier (2000).
“Drew is a very unique and special player,” Cremins said. “He is a combo guard who is very athletic, can shoot from long range and can pass. He is very coachable and has matured a lot during this process. This is a very big night for Drew and his family (his parents, Marvin and Angela Austin, and his younger brothers, Marvin II and Tristen) and our program. I am really excited for him. The Lakers are a class organization.”
