The Honduran ambassador to the United States will visit the College of Charleston on Monday, February 28, 2011. During his visit, Jorge Ramon Hernandez-Alcerro will tour campus, have lunch with students and present a free public lecture titled “LATIN AMERICA – U.S. RELATIONS: Is Latin America in the U.S. Front Yard?” This lecture will be held at 2:30 p.m. in Arnold Hall (96 Wentworth St).

“Ambassador Hernandez-Alcerro will provide insight that will give our students the global perspective they need to be successful in today’s world,” says David Cohen, dean of the School of Languages, Cultures, and World Affairs. “Our close proximity to the Port of Charleston increases our students’ interest in international trade and the Port serves several container services that support trade to and from Honduras.”

Hernandez-Alcerro is also being inducted into the Order of the Discoverer of Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society, which is headquartered at the College of Charleston.  The Order of the Discoverers is one of Sigma Delta Pi’s highest honors. Hernandez-Alcerro’s impressive public service in support of Hispanic culture, his promotion of good relations between English speaking countries and those of Spanish speech and his support of Sigma Delta Pi’s ideals have earned him this distinction. The Panamanian Ambassador received this distinction in November 2010 when he visited the College.
