College Celebrates 11th Annual Darwin Week

Arts Management Professor Earns Preservation Award

The College of Charleston School of the Arts congratulates Dr. Karen Chandler on the receipt of the South Carolina African American Heritage Commission’s 2010 “Preserving Our Places in History” Individual Award. Chandler was nominated for her work as Co-Principal of the Charleston Jazz Initiative, which included gathering archival materials, collecting oral histories, and other related academic pursuits. She has published several articles that have documented and dispersed information about the unique contributions of Charleston’s African American community to American Jazz.

Three former College of Charleston student-athletes have been selected for membership into the College of Charleston  Athletics Hall of Fame and the 2011 Induction Class includes former men’s basketball star Marion Busby (1992-95), former volleyball standout Claudia Fann (1991-94) and former women’s basketball player Natalie Seel (1990-94).

Freshman Takes Learning to the Next Level

A College of Charleston freshman was featured on a national television show thanks to his enthusiasm for his First-Year Experience Learning Community. Sam Gifford was assigned a project on securities for his “Business, Technology, and Innovation” Learning Community. As he learned more, he started watching CNBC’s “Mad Money.”

2011 The College Reads! Books Selection Announced

The College of Charleston has selected The Known World by Edward P. Jones as its 2011 The College Reads! book selection. Jones will be on campus for a public reading week and book talk on November 1, 2011 at 5:00 p.m. He will remain on campus on November 2 to engage with students, faculty and staff.

Coach Nancy Wilson Wins 300th Game

College of Charleston Head Coach Nancy Wilson earned her 300th victory at the helm of the Cougar program and the women’s basketball team picked up a 56-50 victory over the Furman Paladins Monday night at Carolina First Arena. Wilson has now posted an overall coaching record of 300-187 with CofC and has 531 total coaching victories.

Governor’s Race Campaign Managers Face Off

The event will be held Friday, January 21, from 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. in the Stern Center Ballroom on the beautiful and historic College of Charleston campus.
