Nearly 430 Students Earn Degrees

Student Rallies Community to Bake Cookies for Inmates

While most College of Charleston students were cramming for their fall final exams, senior Samantha Sammis (Columbia, MD) was doing some cramming of her own – to bake more than 7,000 cookies for prisoners at Lieber Correctional Institute. It started out as a simple challenge from the Baptist College Ministry to participate in a community service project.

College to Hold Commencement Ceremony on Saturday

New York Times best-selling author Dorothea Benton Frank will speak at the College of Charleston’s 2010 Winter Commencement. The ceremony will be held on Saturday, December 18, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at the Carolina First Arena (301 Meeting Street). Seating begins at 8:30 a.m.

Every Living/Learning Community Gives Back

Every College of Charleston Living/Learning Community participated in charitable events this holiday season. The Block on Bull Living/Learning Communities collected more than $2,000 for HALOS to provide gifts for abused and neglected children involved with Charleston County Department of Social Services. Barnes & Noble at College of Charleston donated matching items for each gift the students collected. The Environmental and Outdoor House presented the most money to HALOS.

First Laptop Orchestra Concert Held

On Friday, December 10, the College of Charleston presented a first in South Carolina – a laptop orchestra performance. Twenty students in computing in the arts classes programmed their laptops to “play” music and using their programming knowledge, they manipulated the music live during the performance.

Students Receive Prestigious Study Abroad Scholarships

In the past year, a record five College of Charleston students have received the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to study abroad. The Gilman Scholarship Program enables more students to study abroad by supporting undergraduates who might not otherwise participate due to financial constraints.

Foundation Receives Grant for Forestry Management

The College of Charleston Foundation has received a $140,000 grant from the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation (Chicago, IL) to create and execute a strategic, comprehensive forestry management plan for the forests, woodlands, savannahs, meadows, and tidal marshes that comprise Dixie Plantation. The grant will be awarded over the next three years. Upon completion of the forestry management plan, Dixie Plantation will be restored to a renewable forest.

College Professor Nominated for a GRAMMY

Internationally recognized classical guitarist and College of Charleston associate professor Marc Regnier has been nominated for a GRAMMY. His most recent recording of the chamber and solo works of Brazilian composer Radames Gnattali (Dorian/Sono Luminus), was selected for the Best Chamber Performance category. Winners of the 53rd annual GRAMMY Awards will be announced on February 13.
