Humberto Miranda, the first Cuban to speak on campus in nearly a decade, will give a public lecture on October 26 at 5:00 p.m. in the Alumni Center in the School of Education, Health, and Human Performance (86 Wentworth Street). Miranda’s lecture is entitled “Contemporary Cuba and Relations with the United States.” This event is free and open to the public.

Miranda is a professor and researcher at the Instituto de Filosofia, one of the most prestigious academic institution in Cuba and he is part of a research group that studies social movements in Latin America.

“We are thrilled to have our first Cuban speaker on campus since 2004, when the United States stopped issuing visas for Cuban scholars,” says Doug Friedman, professor of Latin American and Caribbean Studies. “It is an excellent opportunity for our students and the community to learn about the complex relationship between Cuba and the United States which has sustained one of the longest economic embargoes in history.”

Miranda is in residence at the College for one month, during which we will host several lectures and workshops with students, in addition to performing research.
