Returning to the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship for the first time since 2006, the College of Charleston baseball team watched the NCAA Selection Show Monday and found out that it is headed to the Myrtle Beach Regional this weekend hosted by top-seeded Coastal Carolina.

The College of Charleston women’s sailing team won the Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) Women’s National Championship for the second time in five years, by a convincing 25-point margin over 2008 winner Boston College.  The Cougars, with 84 points, bested the Eagles, who had 109 points after 20 races.

Through 18 races the College of Charleston women’s sailing team has won four of them and placed in the top three in nine others and lead the ICSA Women’s National Championship, being held May 25-28 on Lake Mendota in Madison, Wisc., by 35 points after the first day of action.

Professor Comments on Oil Spill

College of Charleston professor and director of Grice Marine Lab Lou Burnett has been closely following the BP oil spill in the Gulf Coast and is one of the College’s top experts on the subject. Last week, he attended the four-hour hearing of the Senate Commerce Committee on May 18.

Maymester Delivers Hands-On Experiences

The College of Charleston offers nearly 100 courses during the three-week Maymester session. Students can take classes ranging from Harry Potter to the economics of gambling, wedding planning and intro to cyber security. Maymester courses offer students an opportunity to experience topics and field schools that are not offered during the fall and spring semesters.

Halsey Institute Exhibit Opens to Rave Reviews

The Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art at the College of Charleston’s School of the Arts presents: Call and Response: Africa to America / The Art of Nick Cave and Phyllis Galembo. The exhibit opens Thursday, May 27 and an opening reception will be held from 5 – 7 p.m. The exhibit will be open through Saturday, June 26.

Students Sail to Bermuda on Research Cruise

Sixteen College of Charleston students are getting the opportunity of a lifetime – to set sail on a research cruise aboard the 134-foot Brigantine sailing vessel headed for Bermuda. Free tours of the SSV Corwith Cramer, a working tall ship that specializes in education college students in ocean science, will be offered on Thursday, May 20 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Maritime Center before the students leave on Friday, May 21.

Admissions Information Center Moves

The College of Charleston’s Admissions Information Center has moved to Craig Hall, located at 65 George Street. All campus tours will now leave from this location and visitors should enter through the courtyard at 65 George Street (across from Porter’s Lodge).
