ExCEL Award Winners Announced

The 2010 Excellence in Collegiate Education and Leadership (ExCEL) Awards honored more than 30 students, staff, faculty and community members for ther commitment to creating a campus environment that promotes diversity and excellence. The winners were chosen from 98 nominations. Watch a video recap of the event.

Department Names Distinguished Communicator

The College of Charleston’s Department of Communication will honor Senior Vice President, Strategic Planning and Development of CBS Television Studios, Jim McKairnes, with its “Distinguished Communicator” award. McKairnes will deliver his lecture at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 31 in Wachovia Auditorium.

ExCEL Awards Ceremony Today

The 2010 Excellence in Collegiate Education and Leadership (ExCEL) Awards ceremony will be held on March 30, 2010 at the Sottile Theatre. A reception will start at 4:00 p.m. and the awards presentation at 5:00 p.m. The event is free, however tickets are required for entry. Tickets can be picked up through March 23 at the Multicultural Student Center (207 Calhoun St) or in the President’s Office (Randolph Hall).

Graduate Student Awarded for Community Service

Troy Lesesne, who is completing coursework this semester as a master’s degree student in Communication at College of Charleston, received the Paul Harris Fellow award on Tuesday, March 2 at the Mount Pleasant Rotary meeting. The award is given to someone who raises $1,000 or more for the Rotary Annual Programs Fund.

President Benson Delivers Speech on Economy

College of Charleston President P. George Benson spoke at the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Economic Outlook Conference on March 23.

President Benson’s speech, “Moving South Carolina Forward,” discussed South Carolina’s isolated economy and aerospace giant Boeing’s plans to build an assembly plant for the 787 Dreamliner in North Charleston.

College of Charleston head women’s basketball coach  Nancy Wilson  has been named the 2010 FCA Kay Yow Heart of a Coach award-winner as announced by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes on Wednesday, March 24. The award, in its third year, will be presented on Sunday, April 4 during a breakfast ceremony at the NCAA Women’s Final Four in San Antonio, Texas.

College of Charleston German and International Business majors got an important lesson in corporate responsibility and cross-cultural co-operation on March 23, 2010.  The College and representatives from several German-based South Carolina companies met with students at a social gathering in an effort to put these students to work through internships.

The College of Charleston’s Center for Partnerships to Improve Education is hosting a one-day Best Practices in School Improvement Institute for Charleston-area educators on Friday, March 26 at the Lowcountry Graduate Center. This annual institute will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
