This spring, the Friends of the Library at the College of Charleston will focus on humor for its semiannual speakers series. The series, “What’s so funny?,” explores the nature of humor and the powerful role it plays in politics, medicine, literature and film. All events are free and open to the public.

On Wednesday, January 27th, the series will open with a panel discussion moderated by comedian/actor Greg Tavares of the Have Nots!. The panel will also feature Colin Quashie, Emmy-award winner, Mad-TV writer and conceptual artist; Jane O’Boyle, Charleston-based humor author; and Chris Lamb, College of Charleston professor and author. Panelists will dissect what makes a work funny and the effectiveness of humor in politics. The program will begin at 6 p.m. and will take place in Admissions Information Center in the Robert Scott Small building.

No matter the subject of a film, there is always room for some well-deserved comedy. On Monday, February 15th, Anne Slatton, professor of video production and film theory at the University of North Carolina, Asheville, will discuss the development of humor in film from the 1920s to present day. Having worked as a professional writer, director and producer for both stage and screen, Slatton is well-versed in the kinds of humor appearing in film, from slapstick to screwball to parody or spoof. The event will be held at 6 p.m. in Room 227 of the Addlestone Library.

There is truth to the age-old saying, “Laughter is the best medicine.” On Wednesday, March 3rd, Dr. Neil Shulman, writer and producer of Doc Hollywood, will discuss humor and health and explain why laughter is the best form of therapy. Dr. Shulman is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at Emory Medical School and President of the Patch Adams Organization. His long-time passion for educating children and adults on medical literacy, health, and laughter has made an instrumental difference in underserved communities around the country. The program will begin at 6 p.m. and will take place in the Admissions Information Center in the Robert Scott Small building.

The Friends of the Library at the College of Charleston supports and advances the interests of the Marlene and Nathan Addlestone Library as the leading intellectual and cultural force in the community.

Finally, a to-be-announced national comedian will visit Charleston as the fourth part in the series. The event will take place on March 26th and is co-sponsored by the Cougar Activities Board at the College of Charleston. More information will be released as it is available.
