The College of Charleston will host human rights activist, author and lecturer Cleve Jones on Monday, December 7, 2009 at 7 p.m. in the Stern Center Ballroom (71 George Street). Admission is free and the event is open to the public. This event is part of the College’s World AIDS Day programs.

Jones’ career as an activist began in the 1970’s when he served as a student intern with Harvey Milk in the Board of Supervisors office in San Francisco.  He is also known for creating the AIDS Memorial Quilt, the result of his vision to pay tribute to those who have been lost to the AIDS pandemic as well as the NAMES Project Foundation, the organization that serves as the custodian of the Quilt.  Most recently, Jones served as the historical consultant on the Academy Award-winning film, “Milk” and is working with UNITE HERE to strengthen the growing relationship between the Labor Movement and LGBT community.

The program is sponsored by the Office of Student Life, Counseling and Substance Abuse Services, Women’s and Gender Studies, Residence Life and Housing, CARE, First-Year Experience, College of Charleston Gay-Straight Alliance and Cougar Activities Board.
