Accounting Students Help Area Families

Undergraduate and graduate-level accounting students at the College of Charleston helped five area families enjoy the holiday season this year as part of The Palmetto Project’s Families Helping Families (FHF) Program.  Over the past several weeks, nearly 50 members and candidates of the Mu Beta chapter of Beta Alpha Psi, the College’s chapter of the international accounting honor society, either made donations, purchased and wrapped presents and/or helped to transport the donated gifts to the FHF distribution center.

David Desplaces, associate professor in the School of Business, recently received the Freedoms Foundation Leavy Award Honoring Excellence in Private Enterprise Education.   The Leavy Award honors outstanding teachers for bringing passion and creativity to their classrooms as they teach students about entrepreneurship and the free enterprise system.

CSEdWeek recognizes the transformative role of computing and the importance of computer science education for all students in the United States.

Bonner Leaders Serve Over Winter Break

Thirteen College of Charleston Bonner Leaders will travel to New Orleans over winter break to work with nonprofit organizations that focus on HIV/AIDS issues. In just the past two months, the students (16 total) have completed 1,900 hours of service and leadership training. The Bonner Leaders Program is in its second year at the College and has already helped dozens of nonprofit organizations in the Charleston area.

AIDS Activist Speaks on Campus

The College of Charleston will host human rights activist, author and lecturer Cleve Jones on Monday, December 7, 2009 at 7 p.m. in the Stern Center Ballroom (71 George Street). Admission is free and the event is open to the public. This event is part of the College’s World AIDS Day programs.

Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr. will be the keynote commencement speaker at the College of Charleston’s 2009 Winter Commencement ceremony to be held on December 19, 2009.  The ceremony will be held in the school’s Carolina First Arena starting at 10 a.m.
