The College of Charleston is in full swing for the 2009-2010 academic year with more than 3,000 new students who have traveled as far as 9,977 miles to be here. There are more than 30 full-time faculty members, many of whom will be teaching classes that are brand new to the College.

College of Charleston junior Jordan Thomas will be featured on several CNN programs on August 27 and 28, 2009. Jordan is scheduled to appear on the “Larry King Live” program on August 27th and will be featured on “CNN Heroes with Anderson Cooper” on August 28th.

The College of Charleston Summer Undergraduate Research with Faculty (SURF) projects culminate with a poster session on August 24. This year, 38 student/faculty teams were awarded SURF grants for their summer research and these teams represented dozens of departments on campus from biology to historic preservation.

French Film Festival Celebrates 10 Years

College of Charleston’s French Film Festival is celebrating its 10th year of bringing contemporary French cinema to campus. This year’s festival runs from August 27-10 at Sottile Theater. Organizers are expecting an average of 200-300 attendees per movie. Entrance with a College of Charleston ID is free, general admission is a $5 donation.

College of Charleston welcomes 3,254 new students (2,194 freshmen, 1080 transfer) to campus for the 2009-2010 academic year. The Class of 2013 is the most geographically diverse in the College’s history with students coming from 46 states and 11 countries.

In just its second year, the College of Charleston’s Georgestock has become a tradition on campus. More than 2,000 students are expected for the event, which will be held just following move in, on Sunday, August 23 from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. in the Carolina First Arena.

The Fall Convocation ceremony to welcome new students and faculty members will be held on Monday, August 24 at 4:00 p.m. in the Carolina First Arena. The format for this year’s ceremony is different from previous years with more emphasis on ways undergraduates and faculty can collaborate on research.

College of Charleston alumna Carol Hannah Whitfield ’08 will appear on tonight’s season premier of “Project Runway Season 6.” The episode will air on Lifetime TV at 10:00 p.m. Whitfield was a studio art major at the College and very focused on design even then.
